As if today’s news about the head-on collision between two trains in Los Angeles last night, killing 25 people and critically wounding over a 100 others, the Delhi bomb blasts killing scores more wasn’t enough… now there’s breaking news according to Sky and BBC News that a Russian passenger Aeroflot airliner has crashed near Perm.
I don’t understand how the death count can already be confirmed… but apparently all 83 passengers (82 adults plus a baby), and 5 crew members, on board have perished. Perm is a city nears Urals.
According to Irina Andrianova of the Russian Emergency Ministry, the Aeroflot Boeing 737 had taken off from the Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow, but while attempting to land it lost communications contact at about 1800 feet.
Russian News television video coverage of the crash after the break:
Vladimir Markin, a Russian government investigator was quoted, by Russian news agency RIA Novosti:
According to the latest information, the airplane fell into a ravine near the city limits. There were 82 passengers plus a baby and five crew on board, and by preliminary information, they are all dead,”
Markin also mentioned that the Trans-Siberian railway line had been damaged by the plane crash.
Russian news agency video coverage on television:
It’ll be interesting to see how much real news comes out of this tragedy and how soon it gets out.
Regardless, it won’t help to uplift the “reputation” of AeroFlot…

Reply to this commentMy friend Tomaso was on that airplane. Goodbye Tomaso, you were a great person, everybody had a lot to learn form you.
Reply to this commentMy condolences to you Nick. All we can hope is that Tomaso did not suffer and that he is in a better place now.
If Aeroflot improves the safety status of their airplanes than at least Tomaso will not have died in vain.
Reply to this commentIndeed, this was a sad story - in addition, it gets buried in the mainstream Western news media. RIP Tomaso and all the other victims of the plane crash in Perm.
