Kelty Vortex 2 person 3-season backpacking tent review - still strong after 10 years

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Well, just seeing how the tent is… this is a small (backpacking) tent that weights about 2.5 lbs, and sets up easily in about 3 minutes by one person, thanks to the shock-corded aluminum poles and sleeved pole guides… I can’t remember the name of this model just remembered the name: Kelty Vortex 2, but I got it in the late 90s I think from La Cordée in Montreal, IIRC .. or perhaps Mountain Equipment Coop in Ottawa, hmmm…

It’s gotten good reviews by Backpacker readers.

This is for a maximum of 2 adults, and probably 2 adults who are used to sleeping together :)

Here I have it set up without the (blue) fly, and all works well so far. Of course, the real test is in the rain , but one thing at a time :)

Backpacker Magazine Gear Guide online - great resource

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Well, I was subscribed for many years to Backacker magazine and it has always been one of my favorite resources for reasonably objective reviews of equipment, trail guides and more.

What they lacked in terms of an online presence back in the late nineties they have more than made up for in recent years… I just headed over to their Backpacker Gear Guide online and it’s quite expansive and well presented. It would be nice to be able to filter their equipment by Manufacturer (since I love my Arcteryx Bora 70 backpack) and also to see volumes in litres instead of just cubic inches, but those are relatively minor quibbles.

Worth checking out…

Now… back to lunch and then back to work hehe.
