23 Mar 07 Volunteer Canada site and Government of Canada Employee Volunteer Leave
I came across the site of Volunteer Bénévoles Canada and it’s very nicely done (and perfect domains in both languages)… it’s financed in part by the Department of Canadian Heritage.
They have a lot of interesting resources on volunteerism and an interesting directory of Canadian corporations that have formal employee volunteerism encouragement programs. Sadly absent from that list is… the Government of Canada. The vast majority of the Canadian Government Employees are allowed one day of leave with pay to perform volunteer work. The leave is granted on an honour basis. That’s 7.5 hours per fiscal year, and I think that just about all Federal job classification groups have this entitlement.
Now I just have to figure out who to write to in the government (hmm TBS ? PWGSC ? the PM himself? )
The Volunteer Canada site actually is as good as the top US or international sites in terms of usability and functionality!

(not so sure about living in NYC at least once in a lifetime.. then again, I still love New York - even post 9/11)…

Winter Solstice.
And from that moment on, our days will slowly become longer and longer. Selon une voisine (et collègue) (et amie) …. nous allons gagner environs une minute de soleil à tous les jours à partir de demain.
Ok, since I get $75 (gross) per month as a bilingualism bonus from one of my employers clients… in English:
According to a neighbour (and colleague) (and friend) …. we will gain about one minute of daylight everyday starting tomorrow.
So … that’s something I’m looking forward too. It sure is a downer to have these short days.
The bright side - 2 weeks of relaxation, family … a few days of quality time with Zachary & Tristan and Oma… and peace. At least in my space.

11 Nov 06 23 year old East German zookeeper killed by Leopard in Chemnitz
Hmmm,… a little flash back to my stint at Parc Safari in Hemmingford; I just read a Guardian UK News breaking news story about a 23 year old zookeeper in Chemnitz who was bitten in the neck by a leopard while he was cleaning his cage. Ouch. Chemnitz is actually pretty close to where I’m from in Germany!!!
MDR also has a more detailled story and some video coverage of the zoo… in German of course.
I guess my Saturday could have been worse.

Alors j’ai trouvé photo d’employé (a 18 ans environs) quand j’étais engagé pour la défense nationale à la base des forces Canadiennes à Longue Pointe…
Ils ont pris deux photos –
Après cette première photo, le MP (police militaire) a fait un genre de commentaire style “’coudonc, base militaire, pas dans un club!”
Alors parfait, il voulait un look méchant, fine… 
OK, je dois avouer qu’il y avait une pas mal jolie jeune militaire aussi dans le bureau au même moment heheheh menoum!
