10 Nov 08 Sears Canada Remembrance Day Sale - Lest we forget … our bottom line.

Well, apparently Sears Canada has their own way to memorialize Canadian fallen soldiers.

In a full page advertisement placed in the Metro Toronto Newspaper on page 29, Sears Canada proudly advertised a Remembrance Day only sale for tomorrow, November 11th. To make it even more alluring to forget about the 11th hour, they offer special deals for those who get into the store as fast as possible.

The advertisement and sale promotion was posted to many Canadian shopping bargain community sites, including RedFlagDeals and PriceNetwork – the reaction was swift and less than flattering. Instead of the usual discussion about what deals were really the best ones, it was overwhelmingly agreed that Sears had gone over the edge in trying to capitalise on what the marketing folks certainly saw as merely another “special event” promo opportunity.

There is, obviously, a difference in turning Halloween, Valentines and even Christmas in purely commercial opportunities… then again, perhaps this is what our extreme capitalist society (even here in Canada) has come to.

06 Oct 08 Dalton Fury Book : Kill Bin Laden : A Delta Force Commanders Account of the Hunt for the Worlds Most Wanted Man

Kill Bin Laden : A Delta Force Commanders...

Yesterday I wrote about Scott Pelley of CBS 60 Minutes doing a pretty fascinating interview with “Dalton Fury” a Delta Force commander who lead a team of 40-50 elite Delta Force commandos to attempt to kill Osama Bin Laden shortly after the September 11 attacks.

Of course, the interview was partially in support of the new book Kill Bin Laden : A Delta Force Commanders Account of the Hunt for the Worlds Most Wanted Man which was released today… it seems like it would be an interesting read.

$18.24 on Amazon.ca

All those sites also have the book in other formats (such as Audio CDs, etc.)

05 Oct 08 CBS 60 Minutes report on Delta Force mission lead by “Dalton Fury” against Osama Bin Laden… pre-empted at 8:00pm by the Amazing Race!

Talk about annoying.

I was just watching a pretty fascinating story on 60 minutes with the commander of the Delta Force unit (about 50 top commandos) sent into the hills of Afghanistan via Tora Bora to hunt down and kill Osama Bin Laden. They had heavily disguised the Delta Force commander, who has just written a book about the mission under the pseudonym Dalton Fury, and had first time video of the mission, which was to approach the 14,000 foot summits in the Afghan mountains where Bin Laden was suspected to be holed up.

Previous strategies to approach by surprise from the top side of the 14K mountains and another one to litter the path through the mountains with air-dropped landmines by unknown sources higher up, either in Central Command or even higher (i.e. POTUS)…

09 Apr 08 Ted Koppel on BBC World News America : China has bought $600 billion worth of US Treasury Notes ; effectively underwriting the Iraq war for the US

Just watching a great interview with Ted Koppel on BBC World News America. I miss watching Ted Koppel on Nightline… his point of view and (above all) calm delivery style is still so appealing.

He was being interviewed about the … attack on the Olympic torch, and how the US is between a a rock and a hard place (again) in terms of their relationship with China.

I didn’t know this, but China has effectively loaned the US about $600 billion dollars (yes, $600,000,000,000) by buying US Treasury Notes.. those are the kind of dollars that the US Military is spending on the war effort in Iraq.

So in an odd sense, China is financing the US-led coalition (ahem) in Iraq…

No wonder that every single police office in San Francisco was called back to duty to participate in the “protect the Olympic torch” mission. After all, if the US cannot protect a torch running in the street… how can we ensure, err, national security ?

Hmm, is the Beijing torch coming to Canada?

07 Apr 08 Startling video of Jeyaraj Fernandopulle Assassination bomb blast in Waliweriya , Colombo Sri Lanka

Well, it doesn’t show much more than what Sri Lankan News 1st first broadcast, except the mayhem of the scene. One strange thing is how different the scene suddenly appears right after the blast - more incendiary than concussion.. alas… it makes me glad to live in Canada, where my biggest concern in terms of damage is related to our spring pothole crisis …..
